PROJECT SUMMARY

Jericho Primary School was re-built but the grounds were left un-useable. We re-designed the whole area, themed around the Lake District to inspire the children about where they live. The design includes a mountain top plateau, swathes of grass with feature steps and a craggy path down to a lake represented in blue with play equipment which extends the playground. The garden continues with weaving paths and a woodland zone. A productive garden, fruit trees and planting enhance the space further to provide a multi-sensory space for generations to come.

KEY POINTS

  • Mountain top plateau, retained with boulders, makes the most of the sea views, and provides space for various activities as well as quiet reflection space. A winding pathway provides all weather access in resin bound surfacing.
  • Two lawns, one with large steps to access the plateau and the other lower lawn for sitting and enjoyment both soften the space and add to the overall theme.
  • The tarmac area has been extended allowing more space at playtimes, or for P.E. lessons, and play equipment has been added, also with an outdoor/climbing theme with blue safety surface representing the lakes.
  • Boulder retaining walls and rock garden are extended throughout the design to replicate the mountains in the Lake District, and add interest to the design.
  • A waving timber post feature adds a fun focal point at the bottom of the garden, accentuating the curves and creating division without hidden spaces.
  • Sensory planting with all year round interest has been carried through the gardens to enhance the overall design, but also add a sensory element for the children with colours, foliage, scent and texture.
  • A productive garden with raised beds has been built to the top of the garden, maximising the sunshine, and fruit trees planted to the boundary.
  • The overall design creates a multi-sensory space to enhance motor skills, provide reflective spaces, and areas for outdoor learning. Scent, colour, texture and movement combined into a design that will inspire generations for years to come.
  • Note; we made some tweaks after the concept design phase, thats all part of the process and how we work with customers to achieve the best outcome!

AFTER

“Amanda made the process of designing our grounds a very enjoyable experience and we are constantly delighted with the result. Our school grounds have been transformed from unusable spaces to a bright and vibrant landscape. We have seen benefits for our children in not only improving our outdoor environments to make them more stimulating as places for learning and play but in engaging children in the design, planning and construction of outdoor projects. In doing so, our children have gained a greater appreciation of how quality play spaces are created. More importantly in my view, an awareness of their impact on the environment and how to manage that in positive, sustainable ways. Our children now have a space where they can increasingly and enthusiastically engage in gardening, tree planting, physical development, playing a range of sports or simply just sit and calmly take in the amazing views around them. From Amanda’s initial concept design, her detailed drawings, to her project management, she has been meticulous in ensuring that our children and our school have been at the centre of the process. Her commitment to the project has been above and beyond. Amanda has been a delight to work with. She combines the technical skills of an architect with her extensive knowledge of plants and has produced a unique and beautiful space for our school.”
