Process

When it comes to designing gardens, it’s really important to understand all the stages of a project and follow a process to ensure the garden you desire is what becomes reality at the end.

At the beginning it’s all about gathering information, from the site in terms of limitations and opportunities, to gleaning your requirements as a customer; what are you hoping to achieve, who will be using the space, and how much time you are looking to spend maintaining it? This is followed by the practical bit – the survey. Having an accurate plan with levels at the beginning from the concept stage means we can create drawings that will be accurate when taken through to the build process.

What follows are the various stages of the design through to the final build. Read on to find out more about what is involved.

Meeting

The initial meeting has a number of purposes. Firstly it’s important to understand what you as a client are looking for. Would you like to have more seating areas, sort out slopes, have areas to grow your own edibles, introduce more planting, or garden buildings? Once this is understood the garden and location are assessed looking at what can be done, what needs to be added or taken away and if there are any other factors to take into account. From here we can provide a detailed quotation for our work.

Survey

If you decide to proceed with a design, the first step is to complete a survey. We use a laser surveying tool to accurately plot the property, out-buildings and services, existing features to remain, boundaries and levels. This is then imported into our CAD software to create an accurate model of the site from which we can begin the design process. Having the site correctly modelled not only helps us to represent our ideas but also ensure that when it comes to the build process it all runs as smoothly as possible.

DESIGN DELIVERY

The design stages of the project are often the longest and can comprise a number of components. The first step is to create a concept design, this is the ideas phase of the project and includes all the areas, shapes, general materials options. This progresses onto a detailed design which covers all the finer details to enable a contractor to quote for the work, and then ultimately build from. All elements of the project should be worked through by the time the first hole is dug!

Project Implementation

The final stage of the process is of course the build. We can help with this through site meetings and being available to answer questions. It is also important to cover regulations such as CDM and can act as Principle Designer if required. Once all hard landscaping is complete, if planting is necessary we can assist with sourcing and planting to provide the finishing touches. Of course, the last stage is for you to sit back and enjoy your finished garden.
